Places to go
BALLROOM dancing
in the Boston/Cambridge area

NOTE: We have been out of town since April 2007,
and have NOT been updating this page regularly. Sorry!

However, many listings below include a link to the
event's own web site. If you combine our opinions and
their web sites, you should have good, current info.

There are distressingly few places to go Ballroom dancing in the Boston area. The sweetest of them all, the Bay Tower Room lounge, with its magnificent view of the Customs House clock and Boston harbor, closed. Here are the remaining places we know about.

There are also practice dances held about once every two weeks by the various ballroom dance studios in the area. You can find a list of them at (It's actually a list of places to learn Swing, but since every Ballroom studio also teaches Swing, it's a handy reference list. You just have to ignore the places that only teach Swing.)

For Holiday ballroom dancing, check the Boston Globe, call around to the fancy hotels (ask for the concierge), and search the 'net. Also note that K&S (see below) holds an annual holiday dance, usually in early December.

Ryles (upstairs room) Every Saturday.
212 Hampshire St., corner of Inman St., Inman Square, Cambridge. 617-876-9330. Admission $10. Age ID req'd (19+). Freebie lesson at 9:15, dancing to recorded music until 1:30 am. Ineffective air-conditioning; dress lightly. Cash bar and BBQ-restaurant food available. A wide range of dancers, ranging from friendly beginners to unfriendly hard-core Ballroom dancers from the organizer's studio. If you are looking for a pleasant evening and a wide mix of music, you'll find this to be a nice alternative.

K&S Dances (link). First Saturday of every month, approximately.
Mackenzie Center, 1337 Centre Street, Newton MA. Admission $12, includes snacks. 7-8pm free lesson. 8:00-Midnight dancing.
Word is that this is a very pleasant dance event. These folks are based in Cranston, RI, where they also hold dances.
